Bulgaria: The Rising Hub for Computer Science and Innovation

Bulgaria is steadily carving out a name for itself as a rising innovation hub in Europe. With a strong technical workforce, government-backed initiatives, and a rapidly maturing startup ecosystem, the country is emerging as a key player in the global technology landscape.

At the heart of this transformation is Sofia, the nation’s capital and its undisputed tech epicenter. Leading this charge is INSAIT (Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Technology).

Founded in 2022, the institute is structured as a special unit of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Martin Vechev, a Full Professor at ETH Zürich, is the Chair of INSAIT’s Supervisory Board.

The institute is financed by the Bulgarian government with an investment of 100 million USD over 10 years. INSAIT is also supported by donations from Google, Amazon Web Services, DeepMind, SiteGround, VMware, and tech entrepreneurs

INSAIT: Driving Bulgaria’s Deep-Tech Revolution

Through its partnerships with ETH Zurich and EPFL, INSAIT is creating an ecosystem where world-class scientists and engineers can conduct groundbreaking research and translate discoveries into real-world applications. Its influence is expected to drive the next generation of deep-tech startups, fostering innovation in areas such as autonomous systems, robotics, and cloud computing.

INSAIT’s research areas include:

  •  Computer vision is a key component of modern AI systems and a central part of the research at INSAIT. It is an interdisciplinary field for computers to gain a high-level understanding of images.
  •  INSAIT focuses on the software aspects of quantum computation, including programming languages, optimization, verification, and algorithms.
  •  INSAIT works on fundamental questions in mathematical logic and decision-making under uncertainty, as well as on applications and advancements of existing automated reasoning techniques

Sofia Tech Park: Powering Research and Development

As Bulgaria’s first science and technology park, Sofia Tech Park plays a crucial role in fostering innovation and research. The park is home to high-tech laboratories, an incubator for early-stage startups, and a collaborative environment where academia and industry intersect.

Sofia Tech Park collaborates with private and public institutions, universities, and business clusters to create a unique innovation environment, providing support to commercialize new technologies, products, and services.

The complex consists of 11 high-tech laboratories specializing in areas such as high-performance computing, virtual reality, cybersecurity, and bioinformatics.

Sofia Tech Park also has an incubator that supports over 40 startups developing tech and innovation ideas, offering specially designed offices and a coworking space.

In 2023, companies within the Sofia Tech Park ecosystem attracted investments totaling over 9 million BGN for their business ideas and projects.
